Categories of Philosophy

There are two main categories of Philosophy:
  1. Theoretical Philosophy
It directs itselft to knowing things as they are without thinking. Its ultimate aim is the knowledge of truth.

  • Metaphysics- explains the nature of being.
  • Ontology- deals with structure, status , and order of things.
  • Cosmology- study of the universe.
  • Theodicy- part of theology concerned with the goodness and omnipotence of God.
  • Psychology- study of human and animal mental functions and behaviors.
  • Epistemology- concened with the nature, scope, and limitations of knowledge.
2. Practical Philosophy

Directs its concern to things which are material or perceptible and useful. Its goal is not just finding the truth but acting on it.
  • Semantics- study of meaning of words.
  • Logic- study of reliable reasoning.
  • Ethics- study of morality.
  • Axiology- study of values.
  • Aesthetics- study of beauty.
